On July 10th 2022 at 7 pm, ILUGNY member Jason K welcomed 10 fellow stalwart ILUGNY members to Google’s headquarters near NYC’s Meatpacking District.
After a brief security check, we arrived on the 4th floor. The play area included a LEGO-yellow table demarcated by a LEGO-yellow wall with a LEGO-yellow overhead light bank. There was also a white wall with removable Lucite dispensers filled with random LEGO and occasional knock-off pieces.
Fueled by doughnuts brought by LUG members, we set about the night’s assignments:
1) Build I LUG NY signs.
2) Build the I LUG NY QR code.
3) Build an original version of, or rebuild, the Lego set of the Statue of Liberty.
4) Build whatever else we wanted to.
The first step was to dump the LEGO out of the Lucite dispensers and walk our hands through the resulting pile.
Builds created that night included a NY Mets logo built by Murphy; a Pokémon head and a frowning minifig head built by Dave S; 2 trees built by Tyson S and Rick T.; a spaceship by Justin W; 2 robot-like figures built by Elisa and Scott; and the LEGO Statue of Liberty.
There were also 2 I LUG NY signs created that night: one created collectively, the other by Brian G. The QR code was built by Dave S and Jason K. All creations were placed on a shelf adjacent to the LEGO area near Googlers’ creations for all to marvel at and enjoy. And of course, we cleaned up our work table before leaving.
