Spurred on by the Brickset community donation of LEGO over the summer that I LUG NY was glad to be part of, the members of I LUG NY decided to collect LEGO to donate to hospitals. The LEGO pictured below was the result of smart shopping and a promotion at the LEGO booth during Brick Fair, Virginia.
Instead of working with one hospital we decided to donate LEGO to two local children’s hospitals, Maria Ferreri Children’s Hospital in Westchester and Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park. This article is about the donation to Cohen Children’s Medical Center.
The members of I LUG NY know how to find deals on LEGO. We used this knowledge to gather LEGO to donate to local hospitals. Mike Bader and Brian Wygand volunteered to partner with Maria Ferreri and Cohen to arrange a donation drop off. The EC voted unanimously to set aside money from the LUG budget to pay for the donations. The pictures below are of the donation to Cohen Children’s Medical Center. The LEGO was dropped off today and the hospital was very happy to receive the LEGO.
I am a former patient of Cohen and remember being treated like a king while under their care. I know that when I was a young patient in the hospital that a small LEGO set would have both put a smile on my face but it would have also taken my mind off of why I was in the hospital in the first place. As an adult I find that building with LEGO helps me focus on what I am building and it takes my mind off of whatever problems life throws at me. It is our hope this donation of LEGO gives the young builders a fun break from what ails them.
